Rethinking Leading and Following
Co-Creation instead of Command-Response

What happens when two people communicate during a dance, listening and responding to one another instead of one person simply doing what the other dictates? What kind of new dynamic emerges when the follower sets the “strategy” and the leader provides the “tactics”? Who actually shapes the dance?
In this workshop, we want to reflect on, experience, and collectively explore lead-follow dynamics. Although dance roles in Lindy Hop are increasingly degendered in class settings, we still frequently encounter fairly heteronormative patterns on the dance floor and in lessons: female-presenting followers who only dance what the male-presenting lead decides. This not only undermines the follower’s initiative but can also put leaders under immense pressure, making them feel they must constantly “deliver” and carry sole responsibility for the dance. Let’s join together to explore how we can fill both roles with newfound freedom and view the dance as a collaborative project where both sides play an active part in the creation.

Switch Workshop
Switching roles while dancing automatically undermines the idea that our gender must have any influence on our dancing. So let's work on our switching together!

In the switch workshop, we won't have one dancer teaching everyone else; all participants benefit from each other, show each other what they know, try out new moves, and talk about what is important to them. We moderate the event and will provide a structure to the event, but we are happy to be flexible and look forward to an open and lively exchange, with comments, ideas and contributions from as many people as possible!
Level: This workshop is not suitable for dancers who have only danced in one role so far. You don't have to be a switch pro, but you should know the basics in both roles.
Can I join even if I don't identify as queer? Yes! This workshop is open to queer dancers and allies alike.
